What a word counter actually measures

Different programs count words differently. Pixuna counts a word as a run of letters or numbers, with apostrophes and hyphens allowed inside it, so "don’t" and "well-known" each count once. Other tools may split on hyphens or treat numbers differently, so expect small differences when you compare results.

The Word & Character Counter also reports characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and lines. Sentence counts are estimates because abbreviations and decimals can look like sentence endings. Reading and speaking times use roughly 200 and 130 words per minute, which are rough averages, not measurements of any particular reader.

Why limits are rarely exact

If an essay, form, or social post has a limit, check how that platform counts. Some count characters in UTF-16 units, some count emoji as more than one character, and some ignore spaces. Use the counter as a close guide, and leave a small margin when a limit is strict.

Cleaning pasted text

Text copied from PDFs, emails, or web pages often carries repeated spaces, tabs, hard line breaks in the middle of sentences, and stacks of blank lines. The Text Cleaner can collapse repeated spaces, turn tabs into spaces, trim each line, collapse or remove blank lines, and join lines inside paragraphs.

It can also straighten curly quotes and change letter case. Title Case and Sentence case use simple rules, so proper nouns and acronyms may need a manual check afterward.

  • Turn on "Join lines inside paragraphs" for text copied from a PDF with hard line breaks.
  • Use "Remove all" blank lines only when you do not need paragraph breaks.
  • Review the result before pasting it somewhere important.
